Beauty Queens

The beauty community has grown tremendously over the past 10 years, with thousands of people sharing different makeup tips and unique styles all over the media. I interviewed some of my favorite up-and-coming makeup artists who are passionate about what they do and are eager to share their work. They give the best beauty tips and talk a little bit about their makeup journey. Check them out!

Victoria

This is one of my favorite looks because it is unique and shows that makeup is another art form.

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

I’ve always loved art since I was little. I loved painting and was even in art classes for many years. I had an art section in my house where everything was arts and crafts related. When I got older, I begged my mom to let me start using makeup (even though I was still way too young). She finally let me (since I wouldn’t shut up), and it all started from there. I would get so excited to get ready and put on makeup for parties, and I slowly began to really love makeup. For me, makeup is art — just on my face! That’s really how I fell in love with it, and doing new makeup looks is like therapy for me. I get excited to just sit down and create; it’s relaxing, and I have so much fun doing it.

How would you best describe your makeup style?

I think my style is kind of all over the place!! I like trying all types of styles to continue to challenge myself and improve my skills. I definitely love doing anything colorful and artistic!

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

The most satisfying thing is finally finishing after hours and feeling so confident and proud of the end result.

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

If I had to pick one, it would definitely be eyeshadow! I think that’s always the focus of my looks because I tend to create something bold and colorful!

What is your favorite makeup brand, and why?

I think I would have to say Morphe. They have such great products, and they really allow you to get into makeup without spending too much money. They are also very inclusive and cruelty-free :)

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

I absolutely love Nikita Dragun!! She is such an incredible role model, specifically for the trans women/men and the LGBTQ+ community. It’s so amazing to hear about her journey and everything she’s accomplished!! She is the perfect example of a strong, powerful, and independent woman.

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

The biggest tip I can give to everyone is to PRACTICE. Since I’ve dedicated the past year and a half to producing content for my page, I’ve become much better at doing makeup. If you never try, you’ll never get better! I’ll admit that some of my looks have been huge failures, and that’s okay! That’s how you learn. My advice is to start slow; a good way to start is to perfect how to blend some brown eyeshadow. Once you get comfortable, slowly build up from there. Also, buy yourself some setting spray. It does wonders (my fav is from Morphe).

What was the most time you ever spent on a look?

6 hours

This is my favorite look I've done so far!

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

I saw my friends doing it, so I tried it and turned out loving it, especially knowing the improvement it gives on one’s face/features. Since I already have the tools and skillset, the need for improvement motivates me to try new looks!

How would you best describe your makeup style?

I would describe my makeup style as very random (😅). I just do whatever I want, whatever feels good to me.

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

When I put on my falsies (false eyelashes)! Because it simply means that I am satisfied with my eye look and I am almost done -- Since I do my eyes before my face.

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

Mascara!

What is your favorite makeup brand, and why?

Morphe, Ever Bilena, and Detail Cosmetics (the last two are PH brands). Morphe has the best eyeshadow palettes, in my opinion, and Detail Cosmetics follows that list. Ever Bilena has the best local foundation! And they’re all affordable.

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

I love Robert Welsh. He’s so calm and very informative. Everyone who wants to genuinely learn makeup needs to check him out.

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

STOP BAKING!

My favorite look is a really simple eyebrow lift type look I did!

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

I’ve been doing makeup since I was a little kid! I wanted a way to change my appearance because I’d get bored a lot. Plus, I loved transforming my friends/family because it made me feel good when they would get excited after I was done (even if they were just pretending so they wouldn’t hurt my feelings).

How would you best describe your makeup style?

My makeup style is actually all over the place. I like to try different things from artsy makeup, to scary, to glam, to natural. I try to challenge myself to try it all. My favorite makeup to do is actually just soft and natural :) but on my friends, I love doing glam! And glitter. Lots of sparkles/glitter.

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

The most satisfying part depends on if I’m doing it on myself or someone else. For myself, the most satisfying part is doing my lips because it’s the final touch that completes the look. And I love giving my lips an overlined plump look. On other people, I love doing foundation. It’s satisfying to glide/dab/brush liquid on their face, especially when I use the beauty blender.

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

One product I can’t live without is concealer. You can just apply concealer and look like you’re not dead and go on with your day. It’s always my first step in my everyday makeup routine. Or on days when I don’t feel like wearing makeup, I just dab on a bit of concealer under my eyes and go.

What is your favorite makeup brand, and why?

That’s super hard. But I would say Nars, only because I notice I use a lot of Nars products. I also really like Too Faced. Typically, I just like having a mix of different beauty brands because one might have a good primer, but a different brand has a better foundation.

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

Funny enough I don’t follow beauty gurus. I follow more fashion bloggers. One that I really used to like was Nikkita. I liked her because her looks were always so glam and extra. And I related to that. But I like her persona outside of makeup: her sass, her attitude, her confidence. I really aspired to be as extra as her!

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

If you want a really dewy foundation look and you have dry skin like me, apply a more oily based sunscreen (that won’t break you out) under your foundation. You don’t even need a primer or anything. And then you will have a dewy finish with the added protection of sunscreen!

What was the most time you ever spent on a look?

The most time I spent was about 4 hours. It was a cyborg/robot look I did for Halloween. There was a lot of trial and error as I was doing it. I was wiping, reapplying, and making sure I drew the lines straight because a cyborg should have perfectly straight lines.

This is probably my favorite look I've done, it took about 8 or 9 hours I believe. It was very tedious, but I’m in love with the finished product.

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

I started makeup with my passion for art. I’ve always been a very hands-on creative person, so it was a perfect fit for me when I discovered makeup. It really pushed my limits and brought out some new ideas I never even knew I had.

How would you best describe your makeup style?

I would best describe my makeup style as inconsistent 😂 . It can be scary sometimes, it can be really elegant and fun, or something crazy that is completely random.

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

My favorite thing about completing a look is engaging with my followers. They’re all very supportive and very loving. It’s exciting to present what I have to offer to the world, and the feedback and support I get from it makes me abundantly happy. I’m dedicated to them, and I love them all very much.

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

A makeup product I can’t live without is my Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara. It’s been a staple in my routine for about 4 years now, and I’m in love with it.

What is your favorite makeup brand, and why?

One of my favorite makeup brands is Morphe, just like anyone else would say, their eyeshadows are EVERYTHING, and it’s also affordable. They have great skin products too, overall, just an outstanding brand of products.

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

My favorite beauty guru is Gabrielle Alexis, she’s very inspiring. I’ve recreated a few of her looks, and I think she has an amazing impact on the beauty community. She’s always filled with positivity and creativity. She brings everything to the next level.

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

A beauty hack I use is hairspray in my eyebrows! Instead of going out and buying a gel, I use hairspray, and it works wonderfully, and it keeps your hairs in place all day.

What was the most time you ever spent on a look?

The most time I’ve spent on a look is about 10 hours. I was up until around 6 in the morning, it was a very long night, but it was worth it.

This is one of my favorite looks because I personally outdid myself. I was very unsure that I could pull it off with what I had to work with but believe it or not I used eyeshadow for it!

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

I was a competitive dancer from a young age, and that required me to wear makeup more than the average kid. Over the years, I grew more interested and found different ways to express myself through it.

How would you best describe your makeup style?

My makeup style changes all the time. I’m not one to stick to a specific style, so whatever I’m feeling that day is usually what goes.

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

My favorite thing is definitely lips. The way that you shape your lips changes the entire look and really brings everything together.

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

Blush!!! Nothing can revive your face the way that blush can. I think blush is the one makeup product that you can go overboard with, and it will still look adorable.

What is your favorite makeup brand, and why?

Fenty Beauty because #1 Rihanna and #2 I love the inclusivity of the brand. Also, to state the obvious, her products are always amazing.

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

I have many favorite beauty gurus because there is so much talent in the beauty world, but someone that I really resonate with is @itslikelymakeup (Instagram). Her looks are always so unique, and she’s like a real-life fairy!

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

SPF! No one really understands how damaging the sun can be to your skin, and of course, your skin prep is what’s most important before doing your makeup. I also think that makeup looks can be a little messy and imperfect. Don’t be scared of trying new things!

What was the most time you ever spent on a look?

I’m not one to spend a long time on a look because I’m extremely impatient. The most I’ll allow is 2 hours if I’m really going for it.

What are your makeup social media handles?

Instagram: @samanthapizzz, I showcase my modeling jobs, fashion style, and of course, beauty!

This butterfly look is my fav! Inspired by @womeggs on twitter!

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

My sister started doing makeup before me, and she was always encouraging me to try new looks. She was the first person to buy me my first ever makeup goodies, and she’s always been such a big supporter of mine and always motivates me to try new things! Slowly doing makeup became a way for me to do something good for myself; some type of “self-care!”

How would you best describe your makeup style?

I like to think I’m diving into the graphic liner style of makeup! I love doing line work!

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

When I finish a look that I’m really proud of, the feeling I get after is super motivating/satisfying, especially if it was a difficult or out of the ordinary look for me. It always makes me want to do another look that makes me feel the same way!

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

Mascara!!!! I’ve been wearing mascara since middle school.

What your favorite makeup brand, and why?

Fenty beauty!!!! I’m obsessed with everything the brand comes out with, they’re also a really inclusive brand, and I think that they are a great example to follow!

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

Nikkietutorials! I’ve been watching her for years, and I admire her so much. I’ve learned so much from her and anything she tries out and recommends I always end up buying! Her videos have taught me so much, and I just love who she is as a person!

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

Find out what works for YOU! For the longest time, I thought that there was only one way to do makeup, which is completely untrue! Whatever makes you feel confident and happy is what you should be doing, & there are no rules to makeup!

What was the most time you ever spent on a look?

Maybe 3 hours? It was this butterfly look I did, and I had to place gems individually alongside the wings, and it took me forever! I didn’t even film myself doing the look either because I knew it would take forever, but it ended up being one of my all-time favorite looks! ):

Gaby

One of my favorite looks is my go-to simple glitz and glam for a night out in Miami.

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

I’ve always loved doing makeup and using it as a creative outlet to try new things. I look at makeup as a form of art. I find it very therapeutic to sit down and create a new look and play around with different palettes too.

How would you best describe your makeup style?

I’d best describe my makeup style as simple with a little edge. I love to add a pop of color here and there or complex gel liner designs.

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

Setting my face with setting spray is definitely the most satisfying part of my makeup routine. I love to spray myself a bit and then fan myself for a couple of minutes to bring the look together!

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

Laura Mercier translucent powder, it’s 100% a GAME CHANGER.

What is your favorite makeup brand, and why?

I would have to say Anastasia Beverly Hills because they have such a diverse brand with amazing high-quality products, and of course, Norvina is a total role model and icon!

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

My favorite beauty guru as of right now would most likely be James Charles. I’ve followed him along his journey and seen him grow tremendously over the past few years, which is definitely very inspiring!

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

Spray your eyeshadow brushes with setting spray for a more pigmented application ;)

What was the most time you ever spent on a look?

I’m a very detail-oriented person and definitely a perfectionist when it comes to makeup, so I love to take my time. If I have the time, I like to spend about 2 hours perfecting my looks.

My favorite look I have done so far was done at 2 am because the look popped into my head, and I needed to create it.

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

I was a competitive dancer for 10 years, so with that being said, our makeup played a huge role when presenting ourselves on stage (along with costumes and hair). During the early years of my dance career, I would let my mom and sister do my makeup. One day I finally decided to do my own stage makeup, and even though it wasn’t my best work, I was still very proud. From then on, I became a makeup addict.

How would you best describe your makeup style?

The best words I could use to describe my makeup style would be “natural beat.” In my opinion, this style of makeup helps enhance a person’s facial features instead of just caking on tons of makeup and hiding behind all the makeup.

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

The most satisfying thing about completing a look would be applying highlight once the face makeup is complete. I truly believe highlight is the cherry on top, and no look would be complete without it.

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

One makeup product I wouldn’t be able to live without is concealer. If this didn’t exist, I would be looking like a walking zombie thanks to my obnoxiously dark circles.

What is your favorite makeup brand, and why?

My favorite makeup brand at the moment is Morphe because of their insanely affordable prices, and every makeup palette that has come out of that brand is to DIE FOR.

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

My favorite beauty guru is Bretman Rock. Not only because of his makeup looks, or Youtube channel, but because of how he uses his platform to bring awareness on any subject to his audience.

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

One tip I would want to share is to LET YOUR FACE MAKEUP BAKE!!! It’s so important not to skip out on this step because your face beat WILL FADE!!!!

What was the most time you ever spent on a look?

The most time I’ve ever spent on a look is 3 hours, which is a shocker. It’s only because I was trying out something I had never done before, and I wanted it to be perfect!

What are your makeup social media handles?

Instagram: @glambyvitto; however, I went on a makeup hiatus to focus on school and studying but now that it’s summer you can expect some bomb looks on that page ;)

Sam Cortes

I did this look for my solo at a dance competition. Everything just came together so well, plus it was my first time wearing a pair of expensive lashes.

What inspired you to start doing makeup and trying new looks?

Since my parents were never really too involved in my dance competition life, I always had to do my own hair and makeup. After some time, I decided it was something that really excited me, so I began learning and perfecting its art.

How would you best describe your makeup style?

I would best describe my makeup style as natural, glowy skin, with eyes that pop.

What is the most satisfying thing about completing a look?

The most satisfying thing about completing a look would have to be once the setting spray dries, and I can clearly see all of the products practically melt together to mimic real skin.

What is one makeup/beauty product that you can’t live without?

I couldn’t live without moisturizer because I have the world’s driest skin.

What is your favorite makeup brand, and why?

I love Colourpop just because they are so unbelievably inexpensive and are such amazing quality across the board.

Who is your favorite beauty guru, and why?

I haven’t really been keeping up with beauty gurus too much lately (way too much drama), but there’s this one local makeup artist who I absolutely adore. Instagram: @selena_willcutyou @idobridalglam

What are some beauty tips/hacks that you would like to share with others?

I would say to load up on beauty masks, serums, and oils the night before a big event to have the most flawless skin for the day of.

What was the most time you ever spent on a look?

Oof, I’ve definitely spent well over 3 hours on a single look.
